FAQs about Christmas Trees

  • Where are your fir trees grown?

Colebrook, New Hampshire, which is situated in the Great North Woods Region of the granite state.

  • What types of trees do you sell?

Balsam fir, Fraser fir and Fraser cross.  Balsam and Fraser firs are the most popular Christmas trees on the east coast.

  • Are the trees pre-cut?

Yes, all trees are pre-cut and shipped to Mechanicsville, Virginia.

  • When were the trees cut?

Trees were cut 1-2 weeks before Thanksgiving.

  • Why should I buy a real tree?

A real Christmas tree supports small farmers like me and provides young employees on the retail lot a chance to learn fundamental work ethic and customer interaction.  The environmental benefits are numerous including oxygen emission and carbon dioxide absorption, soil stabilization, water supply protection, the support of complex eco-systems and real trees are recyclable.

  • Are trees exactly the height listed?

No, they are slightly taller than the listed height. We anticipate giving every customer a fresh cut on their tree to allow your tree to drink water.

  • Does Willey's provide a fresh cut?

Yes, we can certainly saw off as many inches as you'd like off your tree trunk. You will need to get your tree in water within 6-8 hours afterward.

  • How long does it take to grow a 6-8 foot Christmas tree?

Our experience shows it takes 8-10 years of field work to achieve the fullness and quality you expect.  Christmas trees need a lot of love and several years of shearing to achieve that shape and fullness.  Some tree species may take longer because of specific growth habits.

  • How much do trees cost?

Tree prices vary by size and variety.  Average prices are located at our Tree Sizes & Pricing page.

  • How old is the tree I purchased?

An accurate way of estimating tree age is to count the annual rings of wood growth on the tree butt.  Take the fresh cut butt portion and count the rings.  These rings also provide information about the climate in which your tree grew.  Tree rings are wider in wet, warm years and thinner in dry, cold years.

  • If my tree was just untied, can I decorate it now?

It may take 6-8 hours for the tree branches to settle after being in the baling twine, which serves as protection for branches and eases transport.

  • How long after cutting the tree trunk will the bottom reseal?

Once you've cut the bottom of your tree trunk, it will reseal after 6-8 hours if you do not place your tree in water.

  • How do I care for my tree?

Visit our Tree Care Tips page for information on how to care for your Willey's Christmas Tree!

  • What if my tree is not drinking water?

Water intake is dependent on several factors such as growing location, yearly rainfall, species, etc.  If you cut the butt 6-8 hours before placing it in the stand, you should be fine.  A freshly cut tree may not take up water immediately if already full of moisture. It may take a couple days before it starts drinking while other trees may drink water immediately.  It really does vary from tree to tree.

FAQs about  Christmas Wreaths

  • What types of wreaths do you sell?

Our wreaths are made with Fraser fir boughs.  We sell natural (plain) wreaths and decorated wreaths that feature a bow, magnolia, cones, berries, and other assorted greens.

  • Are there multiple options for wreath decorations?

Yes! Mrs. Willey uses different styles and colors of ribbon as well as a variety of greenery to decorate the wreaths.

  • How much do wreaths cost?

Wreath prices vary by size and style.  Premium decorated wreaths cost more than natural wreaths.

  • How long will my wreath last?

Wreaths will last 4-6 weeks outdoors with proper care.  They prefer a shady location since direct sun tends to dry them out faster.  If placed indoors, they will last about 3 weeks.

  • Where should I hang my wreath?

Wreaths can be hung on doors and windows.  Standard wreath hangers are available at local stores.  To prevent the door hanger from scratching your door, cover the bottom part of the hanger with plastic wrap.  Use suction cups to hang the wreath on windows or glass doors.

  • Can my wreath hang on a storm door?

Use a suction cup to hang the wreath on the outside of the storm door.  Do not hang the wreath between the main door and storm door.  That acts as a greenhouse and will bake the wreath.

  • Are there other ways to display wreaths?

A wreath easel can be used if you want to display your wreath on a mantle, table, patio or headstone.

  • How do I keep my wreath fresh?

To extend the longevity of the wreath, spritz daily with water.
